foodsaver

Having a foodsaver is so valuable. When using the foodsaver there is never the problem of freezer burn, spoiled food, and of course, having food available when you want it.

Whether you are at home or traveling in your RV, take advantage of all the sales of perishable food at the grocery store and save money all the time when having a foodsaver.

Lake Wenatchee State Park in Washington State

Lake WinatcheeLake Wenatchee is another beautiful spot in Washington State where we like to go.  Both the Wenatchee State Park and nearby Nason Creek have RV campgrounds.  The Cove Resort is also another RV park within only a few miles.
The State Park is our first choice as the RV sites are there at the lake where we can walk to the beach and swim, put our boat in if we choose, and be amidst this wondrous fir forest and mountain views.  The last time we stayed at the RV Park at Wenatchee State Park, we took a ride to the other side of the lake and took a trail head up to Hidden Lake.  It was so picturesque and we were the only folks there!  On occasion, we also drive about 20 minutes to the small town of Leavenworth, an especially great place to visit during their Oktoberfest.  Not only is the foliage beautiful on the drive in but the town is also busy with all sorts of traditional German Oktoberfest activities.

Cove Resort RV Campground at Fish Lake in Washington State

Fish LakeWe love to drive our RV to Fish Lake near Leavenworth, WA.  There’s a great RV Campground, the Cove Resort, which surrounds a little cove and is nestled in the woods.

It’s family owned and run. They can always give you good advice about fishing; where to go to pick mushrooms, where to drive on roads to look for wildlife, and where to eat if you want to have a night out.

I like to take walks through the woods or take a canoe out for a couple hours while my husband is diligently fishing off the dock. We also like to rent a boat or, when we have friends with us, we use one of the pontoon boats to fish.  The wind can come up fast, so head back toward the Cove before you get caught in the chop and spray.

It’s a peaceful place, a great day’s get away or good for a relaxing week or two.  Many locals come for a day for the great fishing.  My best catch was an 8.5 lb Triploid trout.

Other bests are getting pictures of Osprey diving for fish, watching bald eagles soar over the high hills that surround the lake, taking our 4 wheel-drive through the woods to see deer, or watching the sunsets over the Cascade Mountains.

Icicle River Campground

One of our favorite places is Washington State.  And one of our favorite places to go in our RV is Leavenworth, WA.  If you haven’t been there, you should go.  It’s a quaint Bavarian village at the base of the 8,000-foot high Cascade Mountains.  If you come from the East, you come through the rolling vistas of apple country.  If you come from the West, you cross over the scenic Cascade Mountains and follow the Wenatchee River through the beautiful Tumwater Canyon, where in the fall you can stop and often see Salmon coming up river.

Leavenworth has wonderful shops of all kinds, good eateries, and year round outdoor activities abound in and around the area that can keep you busy for days.  There’s hiking, kayaking, skiing, golfing, rafting, snowmobiling, cross-country, fishing, horseback riding, biking, and tubing.  Or, you can just relax at the Icicle River RV Park campground by the crystal clear Icicle River.

Lake Chelan State Park in Washington State

Lake ChelanLake Chelan, one of the beautiful spots in the US.  The lake is huge, not real wide but long.  Wonderful mountain scenery and wildlife.  The Lake Chelan State Park campground is full most of the time, so you have to be sure you make a reservation early.

We go to Lake Chelan State Park  campground because we like to take a plane or a boat to the end of the lake to Stehekin.  There isn’t much there, in fact there are no roads to it.  Only 95 people live there.  If you do see a car, you will not see a license plate on it.

Quiet lake side lodging is available and a small restaurant.  No TV, no phone,  just peace and quiet.

There is a sizable waterfall close by.  You can even see a couple of glaciers. Great place if you like the wilderness.

If you like golf, there are several golf courses and of course there is fishing all year around.

Enjoy Lake Chelan State Park in Washington State.

Telescoping to the Top of Your RV

TeleladderCleaning and polishing your RV is something we don’t always look forward to.  Having the proper equipment and polishes help. When having the equipment we need to do the job easily and well, we don’t mind doing it at all.

A long handled brush and telesteps, 1400 T telescoping extension ladder are most helpful and make the job so much easier. I really like the telescoping ladder because it takes so little room to store and is real lightweight.  and is adjustable to any height I may need.

No poblem reaching the top of your RV.  Much less time is required with the proper equiptment, leaving more time for fun.folded ladder

A Necessary Evil, Dumping Waste

sewer solutionIf there was one thing we could do without, it would be dumping waste. I use to dread it, having to clean the stinky slinky was the worst part after dumping .

Setting up for dumping was not fun either. First, making sure the stinky slinky would reach the dumping connection, and if it wouldn’t another section had  to be added.  Hooking the stinky slinky up was not easy either, remembering to get the donut and then putting it in the dumping connection. Not fun at all

Now, I don’t mind a bit.   The sewer solution is hooked up all the time.  All I have to do is pull the see through hose out from the compartment in the lower part of the RV, with the donut on it,  pull it to the sewer connection, then open the grey water valve, and we are all set.

Usually around twice a week,  after we arrive at a RV campground and leaving a RV campground,  I dump the black tank (which is fairly easy) by hooking a water hose to the sewer solution system, opening the black water valve and closing the gray water valve, turn  the water on and the black tank is emptied by water pressure. I leave the water on until there is no debris or discoloration showing in the see through hose. I then close the black water valve and I flick a lever that directs the water pressure to the hose and clean the hose completely, turn off the water and remove the hose,  open the gray water valve if we are not leaving the campground. If we are leaving the RV campground, both valves are closed.

RV Camping, Fishing, and Storing your Catch

foodsaver game saverYou have had a ball making a big catch, you have cleaned and filleted your fish and now it is time to store all the fresh fish you don’t eat that evening.

Fish aren’t easy to keep fresh tasting.  The old way was putting the fish in a milk or orange juice carton and then filling it with water and then putting it in the freezer.  It works pretty well,  but it can be a little messy doing it, and it takes up a lot of room in your freezer.  We know space is at a premium.

The best way I know is by using a foodsaver and store the fish in meal portions. It is easy and you can have fresh fish for months, if you catch enough.  It still tastes like the day you caught it.

If you are avid fisherman you will really appreciate your spouse preparing meals of fresh tasting  fish on your grill, even if you haven’t fished for a few days.

We like salmon, trout, grouper, and bluefish. There is no way we can eat a whole fish in one meal, so I store the fish in vacumn pack bags with the foodsaver.  We enjoy dinners of fresh tasting fish from time to time.

Enjoy your catch!

Taking Home-Cooked Meals on the Road

Before my family and I take our annual camping trip to Niagara Falls, I get busy in the kitchen. Although I’m used to making home-cooked meals each night for my wife and sons, this is completely different. For days at a time the house is filled with the most delectable fragrances of food cooking. Unfortunately, most of it is off limits until our camping trip begins.

I put all of the excess foodstuffs in a food saver vacuum sealer, which locks in the fresh flavor of each meal. Once we hit the campsite, it’s just a matter of reheating the food. Of course we still enjoy gorging on traditional camping fare such as hotdogs, hamburgers and marshmallows, but those items will only take you so far. If you’re looking for a variety of flavors and a nutritional advantage, there’s really no other option.

Time for a Party

margarita blenderYou have been at a campground for a few days and met several new friends. Now it is time to enjoy your new friends with some Margaritas (they taste so good).  Imagine sitting at your picnic table and mixing margaritas with your  portable margarita blender.  What fun telling stories and getting to know your fellow campers better.

Your fellow campers may come by every night.  If so, you will probably have to ask them to bring their own bottle. You could then ask them if they would like to play some cards or dominoes.  I’m sure they would take you up on it.

Enjoy your party!
